Cameroon Will Increase Timber Exports To China

- Jun 19, 2018 -

Compared with the same period of last year, Cameroon’s timber exports to the European Union reached 3,400 metric tons in the first quarter of 2018, a decrease of 11%. A document from the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) shows that this decline is not only due to the increase in the price of timber exported from Cameroon to the international market. More importantly, the Chinese market is favored by the Cameroon loggers.
Since the more stringent voluntary cooperation agreement on sustainable and responsible use of forests came into effect, loggers in Cameroon have given priority to exports to the Chinese market. At the same time, experts from Cameroon and China assessed the results of cooperation between Cameroon timber producers and Chinese timber traders. The control conditions in the Chinese market are more flexible. Chinese companies are committed to respecting Cameroon’s definition of legality and timber sources for the sustainable management of forests, and to strengthen the participation of local communities so that they can participate in and benefit from a legal and sustainable timber trade.
According to sources, there is a very positive contact between timber producers in Cameroon and timber traders in China, which helps build trust and mutual understanding.
