The Municipal Consumer Protection Committee recommends accelerating the formulation of relevant standards. Consumers should clearly identify important factors such as furniture materials and design requirements when signing contracts.

Missing standard


The whole house custom furniture is a new consumer industry created under the background of Chairman Mao's traditional furniture industry and the decoration industry's consumption upgrade. Due to the lack of relevant standards, the design and production of the whole house custom products are generally not standard, or refer to related furniture or raw materials. The standard does not meet the actual conditions of the whole house custom furniture. In this consumer inspection, most products did not clearly indicate the relevant standards for product reference in the contract.


Material identification is not standardized


Some companies use non-standard names in contracts and orders, confusing the concept of wood-based panels and solid wood.


In the quotation of a custom furniture product provided by the consumer, the column of furniture material is marked as “SKL British White Oak”, which makes the consumer mistakenly think that the furniture is solid wood. The company explained that “SKL” means solid wood particle board. And "British white oak" refers to the color of the wood-based panel.


In some quotations, some companies will describe the color and color of the products with the names of solid wood such as “ash wood” and “ash ash wood”, which makes it easy for consumers to misunderstand the furniture materials.

A brand of custom partition cabinet products, the product indicated in the quotation according to the expansion area, the total area is 16.64m2, through manual calculation, the area of the product is 12.77m2, the area deviation reaches 23%.


Some enterprises have repeated calculation of the area, such as a custom furniture sample provided by the consumer, the glass door glass area contains the frame, the enterprise calculates the glass area first, and then calculates the plate surface, which is obviously unreasonable.

Some custom-made furniture also has thickness deviation of the countertop, and the hardware brand and quantity do not match the list. A custom cabinet provided by the consumer, the thickness of the board is 25mm, the measured value is 18mm, and the number of handles on the list is 10, and only 6 on-site investigations were found.


A notebook cabinet provided by the consumer, the actual hardware brand used is inconsistent with the order.

Custom process lacks convergence


Consumers report that in the actual customization process, each link is handled by an independent operating entity. Without effective communication and uniform standards, there is a difference between the initial design and the finished product, which is often found during the product installation phase. .


In the design drawings of a custom closet product provided by the consumer, the width dimension of the top line of the product is inconsistent with the width of the measurement, resulting in the finished product being incompatible with the ceiling of the room during installation, which cannot satisfy the consumer's " Customized "requirements.


A custom balcony cabinet product with a seam value of 3.0mm, exceeding the relevant standard ≤ 2.0, obviously does not meet the installation and acceptance criteria.


Hazardous substance release lacks total control


This inspection also carried out a sampling test on the release of harmful materials in some furniture. In the 20 pieces of furniture samples sent for inspection, the formaldehyde emission detection value was from 0.016 mg/m2. h to 0.215mg/m2. h is not equal, the average test result is 0.042mg/m2. h, the test results of 7 samples were higher than the average, accounting for 35%.


The total volatile organic compound (TVOC) release was measured from 0.006 mg/m2. h to 0.743 mg/m2. h is not equal, the average test result is 0.281 mg/m2. h, the test results of 8 samples were higher than the average, accounting for 40%.

This observation also introduces the simulation space parameters (simulated room area is 11.5m2), and calculates the maximum use area of the board in a certain space. The enterprise shall specify the pricing method adopted by the customized furniture in the contract or order, and shall be obliged to explain and explain to the consumer. Information such as the measured value, area, and hardware usage that may affect the final settlement price of the product shall be accurately and clearly indicated.


4. Improve total control


Enterprises should move the total control of the release of harmful substances in customized furniture products to the product design stage.
